urban exploration update

27 04 2012

we’re in the midst of a bunch of ambient gigs now (first last night, at a comedy showcase oddly enough) and the format is really coming together. myself, naff dog, dot 9 and micoland have been working at the soundscape/ambient sets for the past few weeks, and tweaking the massive pile of equipment to get the best sound from it.

we’ve taken some extracts from these 2-3hr long jams, a couple have been put up and we will be putting more up and swopping round over time onto the urban exploration pages:

urban exploration – soundcloud

urban exploration –¬† facebook

permanent links ill put in my links section—

if the kids records have already released some techno tracks that were done partially off the back of ambient works and the idea currently is to do a concept ep , half  ambient jams and half beat driven tracks created out of those jams. we are currently a little stumped in this as we need an 8 channel soundcard to record all the parts seperately in order to best be able to remix the jams, as usual though, moneys too tight to mention.

however as the pure live jams are doing so well we’re also planning a whole soundscape album, something im particularly excited about, and theres talk of film rescores also… big times for ambience

headcleaner live gigs

27 03 2012

so quick update as ive been booked for a few…..

May 4th @ starwars theme event, Full Circle, Leeds

gonna play with Urban Exploration for this private event(contact venue for details), brief was ‘ futuristic synth soundscape’ so thats whats happening! fully ambient and analog, with so far micoland on lead synths, dot 9 on mix an analog effects (space echo, copycat, springs etc) naffdogg on a heap of twisted starwars samples – gonna be a one off piece of madness im sure…

May 5th @ Detached, beaverworks, leeds w/Joey Beltram, Neil Landstrumm

gonna be a great night this, always a good crowd down for this an i been waiting to see Landstrumm again for a while now, his live sets are something else !! im playing in the ‘non techno’ room so its gonna be syncopatien wig out for this one….

May 18th @ Tinnitus, Sheffield

just got on this one – tinnitus banging it out in their metal/hardcore cross over night for their birthday again and in remembrance of Sam Hillier, founder member, who was sadly lost to us all last week. Ill be pulling out all the hardcore stops on this with some heavy power acid…..

Sept 29th @ Modularis, Full Circle, Leeds

long way away, but get it on the list! probably gonna do 2 sets as its going all night this time, one more ambient urban exploration set and a later headcleaner dance set

string theory – first magnox module!

9 03 2012

yes at long last – i finally got off the bench and into the real world – well almost. its only on stripboard at the moment although i have a pcb design ready – just trying to gauge numbers before production. the panels are looking good though – a local engravers using aluminum clad plastic – nice way around the price, look great and no need for inking.

so string theory then is an expansion module for the AFG – its not a flux capacitor proper and livewire will eventually release that, but until then (which might be some time) this gives access to a great variety of timbres. 2 x 2 way switches give 4 ‘dimensions’ and a knob gives a sweep across the ‘field’ (the final panel will be changed to this) and also a level control for the 5v p-p cv input.

this is the first of many i hope – theres a dual synced filter (demo soon) i have a matrix style sequencer prototyped and theres calls for my slider sequencers, plus ive the radio oscillator and im just working on an asynchronous sequencer/lfo/envelope generator – magnox is born!

modularis review

7 03 2012

so ive just finished putting the video clips together and sending everyone their audio and ive even put some cables back in my modular! great day had by all and a great variety of folk there too. new faces and known faces, experts and amateurs, and a good few who just like the idea of it all! people came from as far as worcester, liverpool, oxford and newcastle and all left smiling – great sets by all really showcasing just how modular can be twisted into doing anything….

heres a clip video i did, audio (in order) dan p, umcorps, ian boddy/norman phay, diffuse, headcleaner

i also did some individual vids of the sets which can be easily found on my

youtube channel

certainly full circle is the venue for it, good food and drinks, comfortable and easy going, already got the next one booked for sept. 29th and its going on till 2am this time for those ravers in the room!

Leeds modular meet/gig

18 01 2012

this is the 4th leeds meet ive done – now its in a bigger venue and culminating in an all modular gig – good variety of musical style representing – umcorps and diffuse on drone, dan p on experimental techno, myself doing a 3/8 set and ian boddy hooking up with norman phay for a special ambient set. plus visuals from conflux

all this on top of the usual array of folk and gear for the daytime meet, plus curry and a bar! and all for free!! whats not to love?

the forum thread is here

rave factory final!!

11 12 2011

ok so its the final – one track ‘rave pop’ – one track ‘experimental dance’

i struggled to get the rave pop out of the 80s – so yeah, its an 80s ravepop tune!

the experimental dance is a syncopatien number as to be expected for me at the moment as i cant leave it alone!

anyway vote here

its the number of downloads that determine the outcome an the prize is a vinyl release!!! so if you want to see headcleaner vinyl out there, please vote!

headcleaner film soundtrack

11 12 2011

this is rob blakes entry for the film competition run by trinity leeds and left eye blind. there was 2 days given to make a 5 minute film fom start toi finish. i was given the idea – a man is alone on a spaceship which is broken down, spinning off to his inevitable death – and asked to make a soundtrack and some background sounds. a great project to be involved with an i also built the set. it was a crazy couple of days, the final edit had to chopped right down to the 5 mins that was allowed, which is a shame. there will be a longer edit eventually as it could easily be 10 maybe 15 mins to really get the feeling of isolation – this will have some other sections of music i wrote in it also and ill post that when it comes, but for now this is the film in its competition form:

please ‘like’ it on facebook as theres a people favourite prize up for grabs too as well as the main prize to have the film shown across the country as a short before the main feature at everyman cinemas.

in the coming months im going to be working with rob and the rest of the crew on some other shorts, we’re planning (rather ambitiously) to build a full scale stylised town centre in a warehouse, growing the set with each film – an ill be doing the soundtracks and incidental sound, set making an a bit of acting too.
