Ragged Kingdom closing party

24 07 2012

great video here from conflux (micolands video output) of 4 hour epic collaborative ambient set at templeworks for the closing of Jamie Reids   Ragged Kingdom exhibition – i cant believe he managed to sort this while playing ….

alot of footage was taken by other folk, and so there will eventually be a more protracted version involving the other elements not seen here. it does give a feel of how immensly epic the night was and just how great jenny’s voice is!

worlds largest live echo chamber?

20 07 2012

this video was taken as we were setting up for Urban Exploration at Jamie Reids closing party for the ragged kingdom exhibition @ Temple Works. the room is 80,000 sq ft and when it was built in 1840 was the largest room in the world. it has fallen into disrepair to the point where nobody is allowed access to the room.

we put a speaker in the room and fired sounds across it, the echo coming back through the open doorway into the concert room making it possibly the worlds largest live use echo chamber…..

further footage of the gig to follow……..

string theory – first magnox module!

9 03 2012

yes at long last – i finally got off the bench and into the real world – well almost. its only on stripboard at the moment although i have a pcb design ready – just trying to gauge numbers before production. the panels are looking good though – a local engravers using aluminum clad plastic – nice way around the price, look great and no need for inking.

so string theory then is an expansion module for the AFG – its not a flux capacitor proper and livewire will eventually release that, but until then (which might be some time) this gives access to a great variety of timbres. 2 x 2 way switches give 4 ‘dimensions’ and a knob gives a sweep across the ‘field’ (the final panel will be changed to this) and also a level control for the 5v p-p cv input.

this is the first of many i hope – theres a dual synced filter (demo soon) i have a matrix style sequencer prototyped and theres calls for my slider sequencers, plus ive the radio oscillator and im just working on an asynchronous sequencer/lfo/envelope generator – magnox is born!

modularis review

7 03 2012

so ive just finished putting the video clips together and sending everyone their audio and ive even put some cables back in my modular! great day had by all and a great variety of folk there too. new faces and known faces, experts and amateurs, and a good few who just like the idea of it all! people came from as far as worcester, liverpool, oxford and newcastle and all left smiling – great sets by all really showcasing just how modular can be twisted into doing anything….

heres a clip video i did, audio (in order) dan p, umcorps, ian boddy/norman phay, diffuse, headcleaner

i also did some individual vids of the sets which can be easily found on my

youtube channel

certainly full circle is the venue for it, good food and drinks, comfortable and easy going, already got the next one booked for sept. 29th and its going on till 2am this time for those ravers in the room!

headcleaner film soundtrack

11 12 2011

this is rob blakes entry for the film competition run by trinity leeds and left eye blind. there was 2 days given to make a 5 minute film fom start toi finish. i was given the idea – a man is alone on a spaceship which is broken down, spinning off to his inevitable death – and asked to make a soundtrack and some background sounds. a great project to be involved with an i also built the set. it was a crazy couple of days, the final edit had to chopped right down to the 5 mins that was allowed, which is a shame. there will be a longer edit eventually as it could easily be 10 maybe 15 mins to really get the feeling of isolation – this will have some other sections of music i wrote in it also and ill post that when it comes, but for now this is the film in its competition form:

please ‘like’ it on facebook as theres a people favourite prize up for grabs too as well as the main prize to have the film shown across the country as a short before the main feature at everyman cinemas.

in the coming months im going to be working with rob and the rest of the crew on some other shorts, we’re planning (rather ambitiously) to build a full scale stylised town centre in a warehouse, growing the set with each film – an ill be doing the soundtracks and incidental sound, set making an a bit of acting too.

new genre created!!

8 09 2011

maybe? i never heard this kind of thing anyway. please people correct me if im getting over excited…..

anyways been wondering how to do something with footwork, i like it but its irritating most of the time, the cut up, repeated pitched vocal thing, uurrrghhhh!!! rank. so short repetitive kinda itchy yes but different somehow. then i happened upon this idea:

syncopatien A

so yeah kinda techno, kinda footwork but 3 step over 4 step basically

also did

syncopatien B

this ones 5 step over 4 step with a bit of 7 over 4. not as easy to get into but still working on the protracted techno theory. that being that you just need 4-4 and hang anything off it in any direction. so im stripping that further to be just 4 time for a snare (and kinda the hats) but keeping repetition as the focus.

im gonna do a load more in the 3 over 4 version cos i think thats got legs. im gonna try other off timings too as its something ive been into for ages, only did these tracks for the bleep filtered competition and wanted to do something “different”, and easy to work vocals to as timings not really an issue, you just lay anything on top an it kinda seems in time.

so whats the genre?

syncopation.

watch this space for a load more.

chinese whispers project

21 07 2011

this is the title of a remix project im involved with for interakt records . ive just sent them a bunch of sounds and short loops, these get sent on to the next producer, he makes his mark, then to the next and then once more to someone to pull it together into a tune to be pressed onto vinyl along with another 3 tunes done via the same process.

this is all in aid of ‘youth music’ a charity using music to help disadvantaged children. folk on board:

1.  Si Begg (Nooldles, Mosquito, Tresor)
2.  Carl Finlow (Device, SCSI-AV)
3.  Headcleaner (Terra Recordings, Rephlex)
4.  Cursor Miner  (Lo Recordings, Uncharted Audio, Combat)
5.  Baconhead    (Acroplane, Umbrelladelika Recordings)
6.  Pathic         (Pyramid Transmissions)
7.  Kero (Detroit Underground, Shitkatapult, Neo Ouija)
8.  Monster X      (Combat, Tigerbeat 6)
9.  Tim Exile     (Planet Mu, Beta Recordings, Warp)
10. Flint Kids    (Interakt)
11. Proem (Merck,n5MD)
 12. Otto Von Schirach  90%   (Schematic, Cock Rock Disco)
13. ADJ (Touching Bass, Pyramid transmissions)
14. Scanone    (Yellow Machines, Combat)
15. Anklepants      (QWERTY, Interakt)
+one more as yet unconfirmed

i dunno yet who my parts will be sent to, its all gonna be quite a surprise in the final play i think!!

im also gonna pass the same parts onto a different selection of remixers just for fun to see just how disperate (or not) the results are.

rave idol update/voting

20 07 2011

ok so its not called rave idol – that was last time. its rave factory. anyways audition was aired, they listened to my tune and….. not a bad word to be said! since i didnt tell them how id made my tunes was quite nice to hear that the production was “as it should be” and that “there some really interesting drum editing going on”. i cant edit or post produce so shows the modular theory is passable!!

good, intelligent comments from the panel on all the tunes actually and well worth a listen from an educational perspective to see how your feelings on the tracks compare as far as production, arrangment etc. – there are 29 tunes quite varied, and its 2 an half hours mind!!

anyways deal is to vote you have to buy the track for 23p which is split twixt artist and ill fm. if anyone wants to vote for me/buy the track you can do it here

next round is techno so im working on a track for then (everyone has to put a track in whether you get voted on or not) titled something like ‘in the beginning there was a sine wave’.  wack title but thats the lyric anyway. tell you what, wait for the tune eh? 10th august.
